La Salle Military Academy began in 1871 as the Westchester Institute, a novitiate for the Brothers of the Christian Schools (Christian Brothers). In 1883 it became a boys' school, Sacred Heart Academy. Military programs were added in the 1890s, and the name was changed to Clason Point Military Academy (after its location in the Bronx) in 1906.
